| COMMENTS Right on the edge of the sand at Myrtle's Beach in early August, you expect to find a watering hole for all the tourists that have come to spend lots of money. But, that wouldn't be Pop's Place. Pop's place is a "cheers" kind of bar where everyone knew everyone else. The regulars had grown up there or were transplants that considered themselves home. They seemed friendly and open to new people. The warmth of the day and the brightness of the sun had everyone inside where the beer was cold and the conversation easy. As the only outsider, I was the momentary subject of inquiry. What to drink? What do you have. Obviously from the bartenders response, I should have known. I'm glad I didn't ask for a beer list. It turns out the beer menu is short - American Majors, and not all of them. But, Amber Bock was their introduction into those "other" beers so I chose it. Having a dark substance in my glass attracted attention also. And, I was stunned to hear the price of $2.00 for a 16 oz draft. This was a real 16 oz, not one of those 14 oz glasses many up-scale bars like to call a "pint." Beer prices run from $1.50 for a short tap, to $2 for a 16 oz, to a 32 oz for $6. Draft beers are all from the Bud family of beers. Bottles or cans of American Major beers are $2 or $2.25. It turns out that beer isn't the only item that is inexpensive at Pop's Place. The food has a similarly short menu and low prices. Appetizers start at $3.00 but only go up to $6.75. Sandwiches are $3.75 - $6.00. And full meals are $7.75 - $11.75. Karaoke on Wed and Sunday make up the only entertainment, but I had the impression that this group made up their own entertainment. Some were playing cards at their tables, wiling away their time through the afternoon heat. This is an easy going place where the average age is 40+. Walt (Kansas) - 08/02/2008 |
