| COMMENTS The mission of the Flying Saucer is to provide the community with the largest selection of quality hand-crafted beers from around the world. And what a lofty and challenging mission that is. With a long list of beers that is continually changing, there is an endless supply of beers awaiting your tasting. The selection of beers includes over 75 in bottles and 81 beers on tap. They also have a limited bar available for non-beer options. Let me clarify that the round item visible over the building is not a flying saucer - simply a dormitory at the local university. There. With that done, I want to mention the clients of this establishment. Naturally, many come from the university community. But, definitely from the best part of that community. These customers were FRIENDLY! They didn't just smile or nod as you walked by, they stopped you to say hello, welcome you in, explain how the Saucer rules work, and encourage you to sit a spell and enjoy yourself. I did not want to leave. I felt like I had just made several new friends and needed to have a few more pints with them. The beer prices are a bit higher than in some other places. Part of that is because they serve the highest quality craft beers available and those simply cost more. The other reason is because so many of their beers are foreign beers - in this case, foreign means beer from a country other than the United States. Sorry about having to define that (but when bars in Kansas City, MO call Boulevard Beer an import, there is something wrong - Boulevard is a craft beer brewed in Kansas City, MO). Anyway these factors do influence the cost. Tap beers vary from $2.75 - $5.50 and bottled beers vary from $4 - $6 for domestic craft and $4.50 - $8 for foreign craft. Monday night is Pint Night when you can get pints for $2.75. Not all pints, of course, with 81 on draft, there are some exceptions. There are also FIRE SALE brews. These are brews that they need to move out to make room for new beers coming in and they sell them for $2.75 a pint. Check with your server to find out which are available. Every Wednesday is Brewery Night, when they sell a pint in a signature glass and you get to keep the glass. The Flying Saucer has food available from a limited menu. They include appetizers, sandwiches, and salads. Prices vary for appetizers from $2.75 - $8.75; sandwiches $3 - 6.75; and salads from $4.75 - $6.75. Tuesday night is Trivia night Walt (Kansas) - 08/02/2008 |
